After Solitary

After Solitary is a virtual reality (VR) experience that tells the story of Kenny Moore, a former inmate of Maine State Prison who spent 22 years in solitary confinement. The experience was created by Emblematic Group and PBS’ Frontline, and was released in 2017.

After Solitary uses photogrammetry and volumetric video capture to allow users to step inside a solitary confinement cell and experience what it is like to be confined in such a small space for extended periods of time. The experience also features interviews with Moore and other former inmates who have experienced solitary confinement, as well as commentary from experts on the psychological and physical effects of solitary confinement.
